Starting with the elephant in the room
Let’s be honest about the numbers. On May 2, 2025, I was elected to Cornwall Council with just 19% of the vote. That is officially the smallest winning percentage in the whole country. Some might see that as a shaky start, but I see it as a clear instruction. I have my work cut out for me to prove myself to the other 81% and indeed the whole community. I am ready to get on with it.
A different perspective
I view the world from a slightly different angle, specifically from the seat of an electric wheelchair. I have been severely paralysed since a diving accident in 1991 when I was just 18 years old.Living as a C5 tetraplegic gives you a certain resilience. You learn very quickly that life does not always go to plan. My lived experience shapes how I represent you. I understand the barriers people face, both physical and systemic, and I know the value of practical solutions over empty words.
"My guiding philosophy is simple: I do what I can at arm's length around me."
Experience in the chamber
While I am new to Cornwall Council, this is not my first time in local government. I have been a Truro City Councillor since 2017.I also had the great honour of serving as the Mayor of Truro from 2021 to 2023. I was the first Mayor in many decades to serve a two-year term. Those years taught me that local politics is not just about attending meetings. It is about showing up, listening, and trying to make the place a little better than you found it.
My politics
I sit as a Liberal Democrat because I value fairness, truth, honesty, and integrity above all else. However, I am not tribal. I believe that all sides of the political spectrum, sometimes even the extremes, hold some of the answers. My approach is holistic. Politics is not just about the environment, and neither is it just about immigration or the economy. It is about how all these things fit together to create a healthy society. I want to include all of it.
Beyond the Council
I admit that I get bored easily, which drives my passion for getting involved in as much as possible. Outside of the Council chamber, I am deeply committed to our local culture and safety:- Trustee of the Royal Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery
- Trustee of Community Energy Plus
- The first patient ambassador for the Cornwall Air Ambulance
The common thread
It might seem like a strange mix—politics, meditation, and charity work. But for me, the goal is always the same.My work is about helping people through difficult times. Whether that is fighting for a constituent in the Council, guiding a meditation for someone in distress, or simply showing up for my family, that is where my work is to be done.
